Video: Tesla Model S Glows Thanks to Electroluminescent Paint
AdvertisementCars covered in paint that changes their color have been a dream ever since the automobile was invented. Even though the technology has been around for quite a while, carmakers aren’t rushing to offer this, with the complicated legal matters being one of the reasons.
Nonetheless, the aftermarket world is always hungry for attention, so we weren’t all that surprised to see the electroluminescent paint we’re going to talk about.
First of all, this isn’t exactly a color-changing hue, as you can see in the clip below. Instead, we are talking about electroluminescent paint that can turn on and off as if the car was covered in lights.
The vehicle chosen to showcase this was, a Tesla Model S. With all the technology and hyper around the Model S, the choice was pretty much obvious.
To be more specific, this is a coating created by a company called LumiLor, which lights up when a small-voltage electrical current passes through it. The idea here is that, at the flick of a switch, you can instantly change the look of your car.
In this specific application, the Model S gets a set of Zebra-like stripes, but the possibilities are endless – you can virtually choose any design and color you want.
Not surprisingly, the paint also looks like a hit for motorcycles and, why not, helmets or other riding gear.
As with any custom element that dramatically alters the appearance of the vehicle, some are going to come up with eye-catching applications, while others will drag this down the kitschy road – perhaps the wrap industry serves as the best example here.
