Video: The Formula 1 engine to shame all others!

Formula 1 in 2014 is an aural travesty. There’s a single dominant engine maker, and its engines sound terrible. So do everyone else’s.

The turbo V6 engines really are technological marvels, so who could have expected this situation? After all, the last turbo era produced fantastic-sounding cars. And the V8s and V10s that followed, too, had their proponents. It all makes for some great arguments about which engines sounded the best.

I’m here to say, however, that all of those arguments are wrong. The Matra MS11 shames them all. It’s not even close.

This particular example is an ex-Pescarolo car packing a 3-liter V12. And admittedly, it sounded a lot better than it actually was; the company’s Cosworth DFV-powered cars did better in competition. But there’s no getting around that noise the Matra V12 made, which is an order of magnitude better than the current crop of wheezing V6s.
