AdvertisementThe Golf R is powered by a 296bhp 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine with 380 Nm of torque. Compared to the sixth generation Golf R, the new model packs extra 30bhp and 30 Nm of torque. Power is sent to the road via the latest fifth-generation Haldex 4MOTION four-wheel drive system, enabling the fastest Gold ever to hit 0-62 mph in 4.9 seconds when fitted with the optional six-speed DSG gearbox. Top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph. The combined fuel economy is expected to be 39.8 mpg (40.9 mpg for the DSG version) with the six-speed manual and and CO2 emissions at 159 g/km. New 4MOTION four-wheel drive system can transfer almost 100 per cent of power to the rear axle when needed.
Other highlights include specially tuned springs and dampers. The ride height is 20 mm lower than that of the standard Golf and 5 mm lower than that of the GTI. Adaptive Chassis Control will be available as an option.
Visually differences include a new bumper design with large air intakes, modified grille with ‘R’ logo, new daytime running lights that are integrated into the standard bi-xenon headlights, body-colour sills, 18-inch alloy wheels with 225/40 tyres, black-painted brake calipers with ‘R’ logos, smoked LED tail lights, an ‘R’ diffuser and two chrome-tipped exhaust pipes at either side.
The interior boasts new sports seats and bespoke instrument dials.
